History of Camp Northwind – Chazy Lake Waterfront Property Gem
Originally known as the Emerald Isle, Camp Northwind was custom built in the late 1920’s as a summer music retreat for Reinald Werrenrath, Jr. This Chazy Lake waterfront property was designed by McKim, Mead and White, an architectural firm that was one of the titans of its time. Some of their notable designs can be seen throughout New England including the Boston Public Library and the Garden City campus of Adelphi University, as well as renovations in the White House.
Werrenthwrath was America’s most prominent homegrown baritone. While he had almost no operatic experience, he still became well known by phonograph owners through Victor records that also supported his well-attended concerts. His great successes included parlor room ballads and songs with music set to Kipling verses. His career peaked around 1919-1920 as he joined the Metropolitan Opera Company and was elevated on Victor record labels to Red Seal status.
Werrenrath was not one to shy away from preforming, maintaining a fuller schedule than many of the artists under the Victor record label. With this drive, he was able to earn more than if he only had a operatic career. In the May 1922 issue of The American Magazine reporter, Allison Gray reported that he earned “about $40,000” in royalties alone, not including his Victor salary. Werrenrath’s final public appearance was a joint recital with Tom Donahue at Carnegie Hall in 1952. The following year he passed away in Plattsburgh, NY.
At Camp Northwind, his summer music retreat, it was not uncommon for Werrenthwrath to enjoy the company of notable celebrities of the time. It has been noted that Eleanor Roosevelt even used it as a retreat over the years.
