Keene and Keene Valley Waterfront Properties – Locations

Ausable River

The East Branch of the Ausable River runs through parts of Keene, NY. This section of the river is well known for its rapids as well as a historic covered bridge that spans the river. The Ausable’s East Branch fishing does not produce as well as the West, but there are still opportunities for some trout fishing. This section of the river has brown and rainbow trout, and offers sites to wade in or fish from the side. On Route 9n between Keene and Ausable Forks, there are several pull off parking areas and public river access sites.

Johns Brook

Johns Brook is found in the heart of Keene Valley, flowing out of the High Peaks and connecting into the Ausable River near The Mountaineer. Kayakers who are looking to explore this brook will have quite a hike in front of them and should have some whitewater skills. Per American Whitewater, the main route running from Caretaker’s Cabin to The Mountaineer Outfitters can be challenging with both rapids and drops.

Cascade Brook

Driving out of Lake Placid towards Keene, you will pass Lower Cascade Lake on your right. From the lake and also on your right, you will see Cascade Brook flowing down into Keene, NY where it connects into the East Branch of the Ausable River. This brook can be accessed at multiple points for various water based activities and is also located near a few of the smaller hiking opportunities in Keene.

Jones Brook

Driving from the downtown area of Keene up the Hurricane Road, you will begin to see Jones Brook flowing next to Hurricane Road and down to the center of town. Like the many other brooks and rivers in the area, this brook also has some public access as well.

Keene and Keene Valley Waterfront Properties – Real Estate

Like many communities throughout the Adirondacks, homes and structures in this area were built around waterways. Keene and Keene Valley waterfront properties are significant in number today due to this historical trend that is very evident in this region. Waterways provided early residents easy access to fresh mountain water, and also provided jobs and transportation as towns were first being built. Smaller waterways allowed more people to have access to and live along the water.

Due to the characteristics of communities built up around smaller water ways, Keene and Keene Valley waterfront properties can be relatively more plentiful when compared to regions with a single, larger body of water. Building sites on a larger lake shore may fill up fast, but in smaller communities with multiple bodies of water winding through, more linear miles of waterfront may be available. Keene and Keene Valley waterfront properties may have increased availability, due to more frontage with existing homes as well as additional frontage that may have yet to be developed.

Similar to most areas throughout the United States, Keene and Keene Valley waterfront properties will almost always fetch a higher price than other homes in the community that do not have water access. While there are many other tributaries and waterways in this region, most of the real estate opportunities can be found on the waterways mentioned above. The Ausable River and Johns Brook are the most common areas to find properties.
