Exploring the Adirondacks – Saranac River History

A River with Roots

Long before vacationers discovered the charm of Saranac Lake and neighboring towns, the region was home to the Iroquois and Algonquin peoples. The Saranac River, whose name likely stems from the Abenaki word for “River of the Clustered Stars,” was both a source of life and a natural route for trade and travel.

With the arrival of European settlers in the late 1700s and early 1800s, Saranac River history played a key role in the timber and tanning industries. Sawmills and logging camps dotted its shores, giving rise to the first permanent communities. Towns like Saranac Lake and Plattsburgh thrived thanks to proximity to this powerful waterway.

Healing Waters

In the late 19th century, the area gained fame for another reason: health. Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau established the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium in Saranac Lake, promoting the crisp mountain air and serene river views as a cure for tuberculosis. This part of Saranac River history charts the river’s path to become part of a natural remedy that drew patients—and later, tourists—from across the country. Winding through the hills and forests, the river provided a peaceful place to convalesce and many healing properties.

Today, remnants of that era are visible in the region’s historic homes and cure cottages—many of which are available for those looking to own a piece of history.

Modern Day Magic

The Saranac River continues to define life in the region today. Whether it’s paddling in the early morning mist, fly fishing in its clear waters, or simply relaxing on a porch with a riverfront view, there’s a timeless quality here that’s hard to find elsewhere.

From a real estate perspective, riverfront properties along the Saranac are among the most desirable in the Adirondacks. They offer not only unbeatable views and access to nature, but also a connection to a rich, storied past.
